Reflection 2 (Module 01: Creating an Academic Blog)

A blog can function as an online journal in which writer updates his or her own words, ideas and thoughts and share them with anyone who are given the right to access the blog. Teachers can create blogs for their own classes for the purpose of spreading the knowledge.

There are reasons for choosing a blog for an ESL class:

  • To provide extra practice for students (reading, listening, grammar or vocabulary).
  • To recommend different learning resources
  • To stimulate out of class discussion.
  • To build up collection of students' work (writing, projects...)
  • To help build a closer relationship between students in a large class

Teachers have lots of choices to choose the platforms for their ESL blogs namely wordpress.org, web.com, blogger.com... Some of the criteria for choosing blogging platforms are the platforms are easy to set up and access, owners have rights to control every aspect of the blog, there is no need for coding skills, the platform is free or charges for reasonable fee and users' information is protected when accessing the blog.

A blog for ELT should be comprised of different sections. From my perspective, the focus of the blog should be given to practice of English language. This part can include reading passages followed by comprehensive tasks, grammar and vocabulary worksheets, listening tasks along with audio file. Teachers also create space for students to upload their writings or projects and for discussions after class. Hyperlinks to other learning websites should also be added. A blog for ELT should be clearly presented, easy to use and eye-catching
